Plants and Animals – “Lightshow”
Montreal’s Plants and Animals are a great representation of the dense Montreal indie music scene. There must be something in the water above the border that gives band a knack for anthemic and complex melodies. With Plants and Animals’ third record The End of That due next week, early single “Lightshow” indicates that this may be one that catches on with a wider US audience. Layers of sound envelop inventive melodies on the track. Energy seeps of the record – they even throw in a quick, killer guitar solo at the end to boot. Though Plant and Animals maintain a dark, mid tempo tone, their overall sound is pretty catchy. I think Plants and Animals will have a big SXSW - they’re already spearheading two official showcases and will surely be adding a slew of day parties throughout the week. If you missed these guys the last few times around, now is a perfect time to get into Plants and Animals.

Kydd – “JuNgLe”
Kydd has a relaxed flow and style that similar to Q-Tip though more laid back. Kydd raps over jazzy beats about day to day life and living in Austin. His live sets incorporate a full band and a DJ for a full sound making him one of Austin’s best hip hop acts I’ve heard. Playing to a hometown crowd Kydd should play a fun high energy at SXSW. His first Album, the excellent Sounds in My Head Part 1 is free to download on Bandcamp and his website says he’s working on the second installment.
